When I was in middle school, I dreamed of being a famous musician. I did love music, but more than anything, I loved the lifestyle benefits of being a famous musician: fame, freedom, wealth, excitement and women.
I love Twenty One Pilots and recently attended a concert on their Tour de Columbus. You should’ve seen all of the adoring fans, most of them female: screaming, yelling, and confessing their love for the members of the band. It was surreal.
This isn’t a unique example. Pretty much everyone knows that women admire musicians, from famous, world-renowned ones, to the local guy who plays his guitar at the corner bar.
And, the benefits go beyond admiration…women often date (and sleep with) guys because they are musicians.
Science even studied whether musicians were better at getting women’s phone numbers. And they were! In the study, men with guitar bags were more likely to get women’s phone numbers than guys carrying a gym bag.
It’s a fact: women love musicians, even non-famous ones!
There’s something about a talented musician up on the stage that is really attractive to females. And, it’s in spite of the fact that many musicians don’t fit the typical “alpha male” stereotype.
But, here are the reasons why women find musicians attractive and want to date them.
Excellence In Their Craft
Women desire high value men who are excellent at what they do, so long as it’s a mainstream, valued ability. It could be anything from athletics to business success. Guys like this can really turn women on.
Men who are really talented at music and share it are showing their excellence to the women around them: it takes a lot of practice and ability to be really good at music. And, women respond accordingly by finding them attractive on a visceral level. Note, however, that you actually have to be a talented musician to pull this off. Playing a few chords awkwardly doesn’t count.
Confidence (At Least Onstage)
Although many guitarists, drummers, singers, etc. aren’t always the most confident and masculine in their lyrics and musings, when they’re on the stage, there’s no doubt that they’re the center of attention and in charge. Much of the reason why women love musicians is ultimately because musicians are usually confident performers.
In fact, a recent study found that women find men who can improvise musically more attractive. The benefit of this ability was even higher for less attractive guys. The researchers speculated that this ability shows evolutionary fitness (i.e. confidence).
So, unless the band members have zero stage presence, they could be singing about the planet Neptune and it wouldn’t matter as long as they’re up there and dominating the concert.
However, I should note that if you’re a musician who only plays by himself, or awkwardly at church or in the school band, you may not see the romantic benefits.
Women Love Music
Music definitely affects humans in positive ways and offers many health benefits. The vast, vast majority of people enjoy listening to music and do it often. So, the person who provides something so important to many people will obviously be highly valued. Many women are extreme music fans and tapping into that, as a creator of music, will make a guy very impressive to women.
Interestingly, a recent study found that while listening to music, women find men’s faces more attractive! So, just strumming a nice melody on your guitar to a woman is likely to boost how she sees you. In the same study, men didn’t experience these same effects (sorry ladies! Music doesn’t make you more attractive).
It’s just the nature of life. Someone who gives others what they want or need will be considered attractive. Making music is one of many ways.
Finally, women often like musicians because of social proof. Social proof is the concept that if someone is surrounded by other people we automatically assume he is valuable. When a guy is on stage performing, if he’s good, he’s the center of attention and appears very popular. Humans naturally want to be around those who are embraced by other humans.
So, a shy, awkward guy who can get up on stage and rock out to a crowd of even fifty people will look much more popular and attractive than the guy in the crowd no one cares about.
Literally, a talented musician can get up on stage and, even though he’s awkward in real life, women will assume the best about him. And, that assumption is that he’s attractive and worth dating.
So, this is why women like musicians. If you’re young and you have the time, then maybe you’ll want to take up the guitar or another instrument. Remember, it has to be a popular instrument and you have to actually be good at it.
