With winter coming, planning activities can be tricky. It’s tempting when the weather gets cold just to give up and stay inside. However, if you’re sociable or feel cooped up, that’s not a good solution. In addition, if you’re looking for winter romance, you’ll need to find cool places to go on dates.
Columbus, Ohio is a great town and I’m proud to live here. However, it’s not really a great “winter” city. It doesn’t get the constant snowfall to bring with it lots of “snowy” activities, but the weather can still be cold and miserable enough to keep people indoors.
As a Columbus resident who works for two local dating coaches, I’ve come up with several great Columbus, Ohio winter date ideas. For each one, I’ll explain why it’s a fun and ideal place to pursue romance with a man or woman. These are diverse date ideas that will be helpful to people of varying interests.
Also, they are great for first dates or if you’re wanting to go with a long term boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, or wife.
If you’ve ever tried navigating High Street on the first Saturday of the month, you’ve encountered the crowds of the Gallery Hop, which has been a Columbus tradition for over 30 years. It’s a time when the local galleries of the Short North Arts District stay open late.
But, it’s much more than an art event. Thousands of people head through the area and stop at the local bars, restaurants, coffee houses, and other shops. Although popular in the summer too, if you bundle up, it can be a great way to have fun on a winter night, as well.
Big Bang Piano Bar
Almost everyone loves music, singing, and a fun atmosphere. And, if you’re going on a date, especially a first date, you want to go to a place that makes the man or woman you’re with feel good and have fun. Look no further than Big Bang Piano Bar.
Located in the heart of the Arena District, this unique place features a dueling pianos style stage with incredibly talented musicians who take requests of your favorite songs. They play everything including rock, oldies, country, and even the occasional hip hop song.
They’re funny and do a great job of getting the audience involved. Although it’s difficult to talk over the music, taking your date to Big Bang for an hour or two will be great fun for two people who love music and singing along. Bring cash for tips to request your favorite songs.
Columbus Blue Jackets
Although Ohio State University football rules the Columbus sports scene, the Columbus Blue Jackets, long a laughingstock of the league, have turned it around and have become a successful franchise. Last year they were very impressive, nearly setting an NHL record for most wins in a row.
So, if both you and your date enjoy sports or just having a good time, you can head to the Arena District and take in a game of hockey. Even if you or your date don’t necessarily like sports, it’s still a fun environment. There are a lot of cool restaurants and clubs within walking distance from Nationwide Area, so you can make a night out of it. Just be sure to bundle up to a degree since the inside is pretty cold.
The Book Loft
If you love books and generally cool places, then you’ll love the Book Loft located in the German Village section of Columbus. It’s one of the largest independent bookstores in the United States, located in a historic building with 32 rooms full of books.
With the German Village restaurants and coffee shops close by, going to the Book Loft to browse and buy books is a great way to cap off or start a date with someone who enjoys reading or writing.
Do you like playing video games? What about old school video games? What about in a bar? If your dream is going to an arcade in the 80s and playing real games, then you’ll love this Columbus, Ohio winter date idea.
The barcade concept is becoming popular across the country and it’s a perfect date idea, especially for first dates. Actually doing something you both enjoy (an action date) is usually less awkward and more conducive to have a good time.
Columbus, as of this writing, has two barcades, both centrally located. There is 16 Bit and Brewcadia. 16 bit is larger with more games. Brewcadia, on the second floor of Barley’s, is a more intimate environment, but with lots of craft beers.
Columbus Museum of Art
If you’re not really into sports, bars, or getting outside, you and your date will enjoy the Columbus Museum of Art. It is a great spot for a low key date of enjoying art and getting to know each other.
The museum is pretty small (compared to Cincinnati, for example), but it does try to keep up with a variety of well known artists from various periods.
The only downside is their hours don’t fall during traditional “date” times. However, they are open until 9:00pm on Thursdays. So, if you want a cool weekday date, a trip to the Columbus museum of art could be ideal.
The first is to go somewhere indoors. The main indoor venues in Columbus are owned by Ohio Health under The Chiller name which has several locations throughout the Columbus metro area.
If you want to enjoy outdoor skating, you’ll love the Blue Jackets Winter Park for romance. The dates for 2018 are February 2 through February 25th. There are public skate times and, being in the Arena District, you can warm up afterwards at various restaurants.
If you take your date ice skating, make sure you know a little bit about skating and start slowly. You don’t want your next date to be in urgent care!
