Halloween as a holiday has exploded in popularity in the last ten years. Today, it’s not just kids who wear Halloween costumes. Adults dressing up are a huge business. Chances are you’ll be invited to some type of Halloween event this year and you might need a costume. If you’re like most guys, you don’t give it much thought. You should.
The Halloween costume a guy picks says a lot about his social value and personality. A man needs to choose a costume that makes him look like an excellent, high value guy. So, with that in mind, we offer our tips for a man to pick a Halloween costume.
I know this sounds a little odd, but it’s important to mention. If you’re going to a place where others are going to be dressed up, then you should wear a costume too. While we recommend being unique, you don’t want to be “that guy” at a costume party who shows up as himself.
Wearing a costume tells others that you are fun. Not wearing a costume can telegraph that you’re uptight. When I taught high school, the teachers who dressed up were, to a person, the cool teachers. Those who didn’t dress up were the uptight ones. And, it only reinforced their uptight image.
So, make sure to get into the spirit, wear a costume, and have fun.
Make it Masculine
Whatever costume you end up picking, make sure it’s masculine. Lots of guys simply go with the flow in costumes, sometimes letting women make their choices. This is why men end up dressed in dumb couples costumes or other girly outfits.
You don’t have to be a gladiator or MMA fighter, but at least choose an outfit that keeps your manhood intact. This especially means not dressing as a woman. It’s not funny. It’s not going to make a girl like you. Sure you might get a few laughs, but it’s not going to make anyone think you’re an excellent guy worth dating.
You don’t have to pick a stereotypical masculine outfit, but at least make sure it’s not girly or effeminate.
Choose Powerful Costumes
I personally like to pick costumes associated with power and dominance. These are the traits most admired in men (especially by women). While you don’t have to follow this tip, wearing a costume that gives your authority actually makes people treat you as more authoritative. It sounds odd, but it’s true.
Some examples of powerful costumes are: boxer, emperor, pimp, superhero, vampire, and doctor. Anything that represents a position of power and dominance will suffice. However, make sure you can pull off the costume. If you’re three hundred pounds, wearing a tight superman costume isn’t going to make you look dominant and powerful.
You Can’t Go Wrong With Funny
Humor is a very high value trait. With that in mind, you can’t go wrong with a funny costume. Making people laugh with a funny costume will almost always make you look good. If you can find a uniquely funny costume it’s even better.
Remember to keep your costume masculine even if you go the funny route. Some examples of funny Halloween costumes are: fat suit, redneck, and pimp. If you can get people to laugh and think “that’s so cool” then you’ve chosen the perfect Halloween costume.
But, make sure they are laughing with you and not at you. Making fun of yourself for things like obesity, not having a job, being short, etc. aren’t cool.
So, make sure you pick a Halloween costume that shows others you are excellent and high value. Halloween only comes once a year, so make the most of it. Leave that party or event with even more popularity than when you walked in.
